About Twenty-Nine
Twenty-Nine is a trick-taking card game popular in South Asia. With two partnerships and four players, this game requires skill and strategy. The deck used consists of only 32 cards, including 8 cards per suit. The ranking of cards is as follows: J (high), 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7 (low).
The Value of Cards:
- Jacks: 3 points
- Nines: 2 points
- Aces: 1 point
- Tens: 1 point
- K, Q, 8, 7: 0 points
This gives a total of 28 points. Although some variations include counting the last trick as worth 1 point, the game is generally played without this rule, retaining its traditional name.
The Deal and Bidding Process
Starting from the left, the dealer shuffles the cards and the player to their right cuts the deck. Each player receives four cards face-down, one at a time. Based on their hand, players bid for the right to choose the trump suit. The bid represents the number of tricks the bidder believes their partnership can make. The highest bidder wins and selects the trump suit. The dealer then passes each player another four cards, resulting in a total of eight cards for each player.
The Gameplay
The first trick is led by the player to the left of the dealer. Each player must follow suit if possible. At this stage, the trump suit is unknown to all players. The first player to be unable to follow suit must ask the bidder what the trump suit is and that bidder must show it. However, if the bidder is unable to follow suit, they must declare the trump suit to everyone. The highest-value card of the led suit or trump suit (if played) wins the trick.
If a bidder or their partner declares that they have a Pair, their bid is reduced by four (as long as it remains above the minimum of 15 points). However, if the other partner has a Pair, it increases their bid by four (as long as it does not exceed 28 points).
The Scoring
After all eight tricks have been played, partnerships total the value of the cards they have won. The winners of the last trick earn an additional point. If the bidding partnership fulfills their contract by taking the required number of tricks, they earn one game point. Otherwise, they lose one game point. The scores for the other set of partners remain constant.
The red and black sixes are used for keeping score. The red six (nali or red chaka) represents a positive score, while the black six represents a negative score. The number of pips revealed indicates the score gained or lost. At the beginning, each partnership has no pips showing. The game ends when one team reaches +6 points or -6 points.
